US healthcare institute chooses Surespan floor access system

Delivering safe access solutions to the healthcare sector is far from a distinctive offering for Surespan, in fact, the industry leaders have been serving this sector for over 30 years.

Based on Surespan’s incomparable portfolio, they were selected to manufacture and supply a prestigious, internationally recognised leader in research and clinical excellence, known for providing ground-breaking, inroads in cardiovascular care, neuroscience, and much more.

Based in the Heart of Houston, Texas, US. The new-build 12-story O’Quinn Medical Tower at Baylor St. Luke’s – McNair Campus is considered the rebirth of the original O’Quinn Medical Tower, with strong connections between Texas Heart institute and Baylor College of Medicine; the institute will be able to offer a stronger and more powerful network of care unlike any other.

Problem

Surespan was contacted by the architectural representative responsible for this project. Specific requirements were to provide a floor hatch that met the strict criteria and layout of a fire-rated double-leaf floor door, having approached other manufacturers, the architect was unable to source a manufacturer who could successfully meet their requirements and desired specifications.

Project/Solution

After reviewing the specification, a proposal was put forward to manufacture and supply a Surespan SACE/FR180, a double leaf, fully flushed, floor access cover, manufactured from aluminium and galvanised steel.

This particular floor access cover is designed to provide an opening of two doors, to suit a structural opening of 6′-5″ x 8′-10″ (1960 x 2692mm). For easy access, the doors were operated by 24v DC actuators. Other additional features include a class-leading 3-hour fire resistance and is manufactured to meet BSEN 1634-1: 2008 and BSEN 1363-1: 1999 and UL-EU standards.

The doors were finished in a RAL 1016 polyester powder coating and the words ‘Fire Door – Do not store materials on the surface’ were stenciled on the lid.

"What we often find with floor hatches is that heavy pieces of equipment or machinery are moved on top of the system, when not in use, therefore this particular project was manufactured to take a pressure value of 300psd equivalent to the 1464kg Class AA".
